What is FIRST?
What is FIRST? Inspiring the Future through Science and Technology
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1989 with a mission to ignite a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in young people. They achieve this through a variety of robotics programs designed for different age groups.
More Than Robots
While robotics is a central activity, FIRST programs go beyond building robots. They emphasize what they call "Gracious Professionalism," which is a philosophy that encourages teamwork, coopertition (friendly competition), and learning from each other. FIRST competitions are designed to be challenging but fair, where participants compete fiercely but treat one another with respect.
Programs for All Ages:
FIRST offers a variety of programs that cater to different age groups, introducing STEM concepts playfully and progressively:
- FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL): Designed for ages 4-16, FLL introduces children to STEM concepts through playful learning. There are three divisions within FLL allowing students to progress in difficulty as they grow.
- FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC): FTC is for ages 12-18 and focuses on designing, building, and programming robots to compete in head-to-head challenges.
- FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC): This is the top level for ages 14-18. FRC students design and build complex robots that compete in a challenging and fast-paced game.
The FIRST Impact:
- Global Phenomenon: FIRST is a global force with programs running in over 100 countries, impacting millions of students worldwide.
- Alumni Network: FIRST boasts a strong alumni network of successful professionals in STEM fields. Many credit their FIRST experience as a springboard for their careers.
- Partnerships: FIRST collaborates with leading corporations and universities, providing students with access to industry mentors and real-world experiences.
Get Involved:
The FIRST journey doesn't have to end at competition. Adults can become mentors, judges, or referees, sharing their expertise and inspiring the next generation. FIRST also recognizes outstanding teams and mentors through awards like the FIRST® Impact Awards and the FIRST® Robotics Competition Hall of Fame.
